Abigail Disney Rejoins Democratic Donors: What Changed?

Heiress Abigail Disney announced that she will resume her financial support for the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has decided not to seek reelection.

Earlier this month, Disney, whose grandfather co-founded The Walt Disney Company, stated she would halt her contributions to the party until Biden was replaced at the top of the ticket. In an email to CNBC on Monday, she confirmed her decision to support the party again now that Biden has stepped aside and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the presidential candidacy.

At the time of her initial announcement regarding her donations, Disney expressed her backing for Harris. She remarked, “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s, and if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot,” highlighting concerns about equity related to race and gender.

Disney was among several prominent Democratic donors who grew frustrated with Biden after his poor debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Reports suggest that the dissatisfaction among donors, along with dwindling financial support, contributed to Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race.

Following Biden’s announcement, George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, also expressed their endorsement for Harris.
