Abigail Disney Rejoins Democratic Donors: What Changed?

Abigail Disney, an heiress and granddaughter of a co-founder of The Walt Disney Company, has announced that she will resume her donations to the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has decided to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race.

Earlier this month, Disney had stated that she would cease contributions to the party until a new candidate replaced Biden at the top of the ticket. In a recent email to CNBC, she confirmed her decision to support the party again, expressing her backing for Vice President Kamala Harris, whom Biden has endorsed as his successor.

When she initially decided to halt her donations, Disney also expressed confidence in Harris’s potential candidacy. She stated, “We have an excellent Vice President,” and emphasized the need for Democrats to unite behind her, highlighting issues of race and gender in the broader conversation about candidate support within the party.

Disney’s withdrawal of financial support was part of a larger dissent among top Democratic donors following Biden’s lackluster debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Reports suggest that dissatisfaction among donors contributed to Biden’s decision to exit the race. Notable philanthropist George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, also pledged their support for Harris after Biden’s announcement.
