Heiress Abigail Disney has announced her decision to resume donations to the Democratic Party following President Joe Biden’s departure from the reelection race.
Earlier this month, Disney, a descendant of the co-founder of The Walt Disney Company, stated that she would cease contributions to the party until Biden was replaced as the candidate. However, in an email to CNBC on Monday, she confirmed her support for the party once again now that Biden has stepped aside and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the presidential run.
When she initially decided to withhold her donations, Disney expressed her backing for Harris, stating, “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s (and let’s not kid ourselves about where race and gender figure in that inequity) and if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot.”
Disney was among several high-profile Democratic donors who revolted against Biden after what was perceived as a poor debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Reports indicate that pressure from this group of donors and an overall reduction in contributions contributed to Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race.
Additionally, prominent Democratic donor George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, also expressed their support for Harris following Biden’s announcement.
