Heiress Abigail Disney has announced that she will resume her financial contributions to the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has dropped his candidacy for reelection.
Disney, who is the granddaughter of one of The Walt Disney Company’s co-founders, had previously stated that she would cease her donations until Biden was replaced at the top of the ticket. In an email to CNBC on Monday, she confirmed her decision to support the party again following Biden’s endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris for president.
When she initially declared her intention to withhold donations, Disney expressed strong backing for Harris, highlighting the Vice President’s qualifications. “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s (and let’s not kid ourselves about where race and gender figure in that inequity), and if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot,” she remarked.
Disney was among several prominent Democratic donors who reacted negatively to Biden’s performance in a debate with former President Donald Trump. Reports indicate that the dissatisfaction among major donors and a decline in funding contributed to Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race.
Following Biden’s announcement, financier George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, also expressed their support for Harris.
