Abigail Disney, the heiress and granddaughter of one of the co-founders of The Walt Disney Company, has announced her intention to resume contributions to the Democratic Party following President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race.
Earlier this month, Disney had declared that she would halt any financial support to the party until a new candidate was presented to lead the ticket. In a recent email to CNBC, she confirmed, “Yes, I will resume supporting,” now that Biden has stepped aside and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the presidency.
When she initially announced her decision to suspend donations, Disney had expressed her support for Harris, highlighting the Vice President’s qualifications. She noted, “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s (and let’s not kid ourselves about where race and gender figure in that inequity) and if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot.”
Disney was among several elite Democratic donors who expressed dissatisfaction with Biden’s campaign, particularly following his poor debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Reports suggest that pressure from influential donors and a decrease in funding played a significant role in prompting Biden’s decision to exit the race.
Additionally, prominent donor George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, have also voiced their support for Harris after Biden’s withdrawal.
