Abigail Disney, an heiress and granddaughter of a co-founder of The Walt Disney Company, announced her intention to resume donations to the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has ended his reelection campaign.
Earlier this month, Disney had stated that she would cease contributions to the party until Biden was replaced at the top of the ticket. However, in an email to CNBC, she confirmed her renewed support, stating, “Yes, I will resume supporting,” following Biden’s decision to step aside and endorse Vice President Kamala Harris.
When she initially withheld her donations, Disney also expressed her backing for Harris, emphasizing the Vice President’s qualifications. She stated, “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s (and let’s not kid ourselves about where race and gender figure in that inequity), and if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot.”
Disney was among several high-profile Democratic donors who withdrew their support for Biden after his poor debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Reports suggest that pressure from major donors and a decrease in funding contributed to his decision to exit the race. Following Biden’s announcement, influential figures like George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, also expressed their endorsement of Harris.
