Abigail Disney, an heiress and granddaughter of a co-founder of The Walt Disney Company, has announced her intention to resume financial contributions to the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has exited the race for reelection. This decision follows her previous stance where she indicated she would halt her donations until Biden was no longer the party’s candidate.
In an email to CNBC, Disney confirmed her renewed support, stating, “Yes, I will resume supporting,” following Biden’s endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris for the presidency. Earlier, Disney voiced her backing for Harris, emphasizing the need for the Democratic Party to unite behind her.
Disney criticized the party for its treatment of Harris compared to Biden, suggesting that if Democrats addressed perceived shortcomings of Harris with the same understanding as they did for Biden, they could significantly improve their chances in the upcoming election.
Her initial decision to withhold donations was part of a larger trend among prominent Democratic donors who expressed discontent with Biden after a challenging debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Reports indicate that pressure from these donors influenced Biden’s choice to withdraw from the race. George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, have also publicly endorsed Harris since Biden’s announcement.
