Abigail Disney Reignites Support for Democrats: What’s Behind Her Shift?

Abigail Disney, the heiress and granddaughter of a co-founder of The Walt Disney Company, has announced that she will resume her donations to the Democratic Party after President Joe Biden decided not to seek reelection. Earlier this month, Disney stated she would withdraw her financial support until the party replaced Biden as the leading candidate.

In a recent email to CNBC, she confirmed her decision to support the party again, saying, “Yes, I will resume supporting,” now that Biden has stepped aside and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the presidency.

When initially announcing her intention to halt donations, Disney expressed her endorsement of Harris, saying, “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s (and let’s not kid ourselves about where race and gender figure in that inequity) and if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot.”

Disney was among a group of prominent Democratic donors who became disenchanted with Biden following his poor debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Reports suggest that pressure from influential donors and a decline in funding contributed to Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race. Other high-profile donors, including George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, have also endorsed Harris following Biden’s announcement.
