Abigail Disney, an heiress and member of the Disney family, has announced that she will resume her financial support for the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has officially withdrawn from his reelection campaign.
Earlier this month, Disney made headlines when she declared her decision to halt contributions to the Democratic Party until a new candidate was put forward to replace Biden. In an email to CNBC on Monday, she confirmed her renewed support, stating, “Yes, I will resume supporting,” following Biden’s endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor.
When Disney initially announced her intention to withhold donations, she expressed her support for Harris, highlighting her belief in the Vice President’s capabilities. Disney criticized the party’s treatment of Harris, saying, “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s…and if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot.”
Disney was among a group of elite Democratic donors who reacted strongly against Biden after what they viewed as a poor debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Reports suggest that dissatisfaction among high-profile donors and a decline in campaign funds pressured Biden to exit the race. Prominent financier George Soros and his son Alex Soros also voiced their support for Harris following Biden’s decision to step down.
