Abigail Disney, the heiress and granddaughter of one of the co-founders of The Walt Disney Company, has announced that she will resume her donations to the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has decided not to seek reelection.
Disney previously stated that she would halt any contributions to the party until there was a change at the top of the ticket. In an email to CNBC on Monday, she confirmed her renewed support, stating, “Yes, I will resume supporting,” following Biden’s endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris as the presidential candidate.
When Disney initially decided to stop her donations, she expressed her support for Harris, highlighting the Vice President’s qualifications. Disney emphasized that the Democratic Party should embrace Harris and her potential, suggesting that if the party could unify in support of her, they could secure a significant victory in the upcoming election.
Disney’s stance is part of a broader discontent among elite Democratic donors, particularly in reaction to Biden’s performance in debates against former President Donald Trump. Pressure from major donors and diminishing financial support were reportedly factors in Biden’s decision to end his campaign.
Notably, financier George Soros and his son Alex Soros also expressed their support for Harris following the announcement of Biden’s withdrawal from the race.
