Abigail Disney Reignites Donations: What Changed Her Mind?

Abigail Disney, an heiress and granddaughter of one of the co-founders of The Walt Disney Company, announced that she will be resuming her donations to the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has exited the race for reelection. Earlier this month, Disney stated she would halt contributions until Biden was replaced at the top of the ticket.

In an email to CNBC, Disney confirmed her decision, saying, “Yes, I will resume supporting,” now that Biden has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president. At the time she initially suspended her donations, Disney expressed her support for Harris, emphasizing her potential as a strong candidate.

Disney remarked, “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s (and let’s not kid ourselves about where race and gender figure in that inequity), and if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot.”

Disney’s decision to withdraw financial support came amid widespread discontent among elite Democratic donors following Biden’s poor debate performance against Donald Trump. Reports suggest that pressure from these donors and diminishing funds contributed to Biden’s decision to step aside. Notably, financier George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, also endorsed Kamala Harris following Biden’s withdrawal from the race.
