Abigail Disney, heiress and granddaughter of a co-founder of The Walt Disney Company, announced she will resume her financial support for the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has exited the 2024 presidential race.
Earlier this month, Disney had declared she would halt her donations until the party found a different candidate to lead. However, in a recent email to CNBC, she confirmed her decision, stating, “Yes, I will resume supporting,” following Biden’s withdrawal and his endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris as the presidential candidate.
When Disney initially paused her contributions, she also expressed her backing for Harris, stating, “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s, and if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot.”
Disney’s decision to withhold donations was part of a broader sentiment among elite Democratic donors, especially after Biden’s poor debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Reports suggest that this pressure from major donors contributed to Biden’s decision to step aside. Following Biden’s announcement, notable figures like George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, also expressed their support for Harris.
