Abigail Disney, the heiress and granddaughter of a co-founder of The Walt Disney Company, announced that she will resume her financial contributions to the Democratic Party following President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race. Earlier this month, Disney stated that she would halt donations until the party found a new candidate to replace Biden at the top of the ticket.
In an email to CNBC on Monday, she confirmed, “Yes, I will resume supporting,” now that Biden has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor. During her previous announcement, Disney expressed her backing for Harris, highlighting the Vice President’s potential and criticizing the Democratic Party for not fully supporting her.
Disney noted, “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s… if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot.”
Her decision to withhold donations stemmed from her dissatisfaction with Biden’s performance, particularly his debate against former President Donald Trump, which prompted a backlash among elite Democratic donors. Reports indicate that pressure from these donors played a role in Biden’s decision to step aside.
Following Biden’s exit, notable figures such as George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, also expressed their support for Harris.
