Abbott Elementary Season 4: Will Janine and Gregory Finally Make It?

The third season of Abbott Elementary wrapped up with a cliffhanger, marking a significant moment for the characters Janine Teagues (Quinta Brunson) and Gregory Eddie (Tyler James Williams), who shared their first kiss after the end-of-school party. This development was highly anticipated by fans who had been eager for the couple to connect. The anticipation surrounding their relationship reflects the classic sitcom trope of the will-they-or-won’t-they dynamic that can evolve over multiple seasons. While it appears that Janine and Gregory are beginning a relationship, it’s uncertain whether they will remain together when Season 4 begins.

Looking back, another beloved sitcom, The Office, had a similar storyline with Jim and Pam, who shared a kiss at the end of Season 2 only to have their relationship face setbacks in the following season. This connection highlights the potential for similar narrative twists in Abbott Elementary.

The Season 4 premiere, titled “Back to School,” airing on October 9, promises to address Gregory and Janine’s romantic situation directly, while also ensuring that their relationship remains a focal point throughout the upcoming season. The episode will also tackle various issues, including a new golf course development in West Philadelphia that introduces a white family to the school and alters the demographics of the student body. Additionally, this situation has led to infrastructure challenges, such as problems with water and electricity, setting the stage for comedic moments, including undercooked chicken nuggets.

The first two seasons of Abbott Elementary were consistently strong, making the third season’s dip in quality somewhat expected. While still enjoyable, the third season appeared scattered, attempting to juggle many loose ends and losing some of the charm of the workplace setting that initially sparked its humor.

However, the initial episodes of Season 4 suggest a revival in quality, potentially delivering the most entertaining season yet. The focus shifts back to Abbott Elementary itself, allowing for the cast’s chemistry to take center stage. Episode 2, which addresses a potential ringworm outbreak, exemplifies the show’s capacity for ensemble comedy at its best. As audiences grow familiar with the characters, their humor and charm become increasingly evident, a trend that continues in Abbott Elementary.

The writing remains sharp, with Brunson and her team excelling in crafting interactions that highlight the ensemble’s talents. Lisa Ann Walter shines as the dedicated yet tough second-grade teacher Melissa Schemmenti, while Janine’s friend Jacob (Chris Pefretti) navigates his single life, bringing a relatable energy that complements his colleagues. Seasoned kindergarten teacher Barbara Howard (Sheryl Lee Ralph) also becomes increasingly delightful with each episode.

Principal Ava Coleman, portrayed excellently by Janelle James, continues to deliver the best lines, particularly in reaction to the arrival of a white family at the school. Her cluelessness offers a humorous contrast to the more earnest approaches of Janine and Gregory.

While the school-based antics provide ample laughs, the heart of Abbott Elementary lies in its character-driven storytelling. Season 4 successfully keeps these dynamics at the forefront, showcasing a deep respect for both its characters and the teaching profession. As the series continues, viewers are treated to a joyful and satisfying experience that Abbott Elementary is known for.
