ABB names Christian Nilsson as next CFO in leadership transition

ABB has announced the appointment of Christian Nilsson as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and a member of its Executive Committee, effective February 1, 2026. He will follow Timo Ihamuotila, who will step down from his position on the Executive Committee at the same time and is set to leave ABB by the end of 2026, ensuring a seamless transition for the company.

Morten Wierod, CEO of ABB, acknowledged the significant role Ihamuotila has played in the company’s transformation toward improved focus and performance. Wierod extended his gratitude to Ihamuotila for his remarkable contributions and wished him success in his future endeavors. In welcoming Nilsson to the Executive Committee, Wierod reiterated ABB’s commitment to strengthening its market leadership in Electrification and Automation.

Ihamuotila expressed his pride in the substantial changes at ABB over his eight-year tenure and indicated a desire to focus on non-operational activities moving forward. He thanked his colleagues, the Executive Committee, and the Board of Directors for their support and collaboration during his time at the company.

Christian Nilsson, who joined ABB in 2017 as the CFO of its Electrification division, brings extensive international finance leadership experience to his new role. His previous positions include senior financial roles at DSM-Firmenich in Switzerland and TE Connectivity in China, alongside a decade-long tenure at GE. Nilsson holds an MBA in International Finance and a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Finance. As a Swedish citizen, he has navigated a diverse career across the United States, Asia, and Europe.

With the upcoming changes, ABB’s Executive Committee will include Morten Wierod as CEO, Carolina Granat as Chief Human Resources Officer, Karin Lepasoon as Chief Communications and Sustainability Officer, Mathias Gaertner as General Counsel and Company Secretary, Giampiero Frisio as President of the Electrification business area, Brandon Spencer as President of the Motion business area, and Peter Terwiesch as President of the Process Automation business area.
