Aaron Pierre has officially joined the cast of HBO’s Green Lantern series, titled “Lanterns,” where he will portray John Stewart. Earlier reports indicated that Kyle Chandler was in discussions to take on the role of Hal Jordan. Other actors considered for the Stewart role included Stephan James and Damson Idris.
Produced by HBO in partnership with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios, the series is inspired by DC’s “Green Lantern” comics. The project was announced with an order for eight episodes in June and has since transitioned from being a Max original to HBO as part of new content strategies.
The series will follow “new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland,” according to the official description.
Pierre recently gained recognition for his role in the Netflix film “Rebel Ridge,” which premiered on September 6 and has consistently ranked among the platform’s top 10 English language films. His television credits include portraying Malcolm X in the Nat Geo series “Genius: MLK/X” and starring in Barry Jenkins’ limited series “The Underground Railroad.” He previously appeared in the DC series “Krypton” as Dev-Em and has acted in films like “Foe,” “Brother,” and “Old.” Pierre is also set to portray Mufasa in Disney’s upcoming “Lion King” prequel.
Pierre is represented by WME, Anonymous Content, Hamilton Hodell, Sloane Offer, and Narrative.
“Lanterns” is co-written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, all of whom serve as executive producers alongside James Hawes, who will also direct the first two episodes.
