Aaron Paul, known for his breakout role in “Breaking Bad,” is experiencing a resurgence in the superhero genre. He lends his voice to Robert Robertson III, aka Mecha-Man, in the successful game “Dispatch,” produced by AdHoc Studio and Critical Role. Prior to this, Paul voiced Powerplex in Prime Video’s animated series “Invincible.” While there’s excitement for more of Mecha-Man in the upcoming second season of “Dispatch,” fans shouldn’t expect to see Paul reprise his role as Powerplex in “Invincible.” The actor has expressed that the character led him to confront uncomfortable thoughts and emotions that he wasn’t willing to explore further.
In a recent interview, Paul disclosed, “Powerplex is not just messing around. He’s going through things. Turmoil. I put myself in that skin, and it was a skin I didn’t feel comfortable in, to be honest. I didn’t want to do it anymore.” Powerplex’s complex arc, depicting his descent into madness and vengeance, was a pivotal theme in “Invincible” season three, and not surprisingly, the character is anticipated to return in some form in the show’s fifth season. However, with Paul’s decision not to return, it is expected that Powerplex will be recast.
Delving into villainous roles can be a challenging experience for actors, as Paul has demonstrated. It’s refreshing to see him find a welcoming and uplifting space in “Dispatch,” where he can navigate superhero narratives in a more positive context. “Invincible” remains accessible for viewing on Prime Video, and fans can look forward to both the continuation of the series and Paul’s vibrant contributions to new projects.
