Aaron Judge’s Comeback: Will He Hit Off a Tee Soon?

New York Yankees standout Aaron Judge is anticipated to begin hitting off a tee shortly, following his placement on the injured list last Saturday due to a flexor strain, according to manager Aaron Boone. During a recent episode of the Talkin’ Yankees podcast, Boone indicated that Judge might start hitting today or tomorrow.

Initially optimistic about a quick return, Boone reiterated that they would monitor Judge’s condition along with input from the trainers and Judge himself. “I think that’s the expectation, but we’ll listen to the body,” he said ahead of the Yankees’ game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

However, it will be 10 to 15 days before Judge resumes throwing, meaning he is expected to return as a designated hitter at first. Boone noted that there is a concern that throwing could compromise Judge’s UCL, impacting not just his defensive abilities but also his offensive performance. “There is a gripping component to it and it’s probably, obviously, not like the defensive side, but probably somewhat affecting him offensively, too,” he added.

The Yankees have indicated that they will not ask Judge to play first base, similar to how Bryce Harper was utilized by the Philadelphia Phillies after his own arm injury.

Prior to his injury, Judge had an impressive record, hitting .342 with 37 home runs across 103 games. He was leading the league in several key statistical categories such as OPS, OPS+, WAR, total bases, and hits. Although he is no longer the frontrunner for the AL MVP, which has shifted to Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh, Judge maintains the second-best odds (-105).

To mitigate the impact of Judge’s absence, the Yankees have recently acquired third baseman Ryan McMahon and utility infielder Amed Rosario. With the trade deadline approaching on July 31, fans are eager to see how the team will bolster its roster further.

This situation serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of sports injuries and their impact on team dynamics. Baseball fans have their fingers crossed for Judge’s swift and successful recovery, as his return could be pivotal for the Yankees as they strive to improve their standings in the American League East.
