A Barbie doll commemorating the late, Detroit-raised singer Aaliyah was released on Thursday to celebrate what would have been her 46th birthday, and it sold out almost immediately.
Part of Mattel’s Music Series, the Aaliyah doll was designed in a faux leather outfit reminiscent of her look in the “One in a Million” music video. The doll was available for purchase exclusively through the Mattel website and for Barbie Club 59 members, with a broader release planned through Target. However, it quickly became unavailable as fans in Detroit woke up to the news of its release.
Aaliyah, born Aaliyah Haughton in Brooklyn and raised in Detroit, made waves in the music industry at a young age, achieving her first Billboard Hot 100 hit at just 15 years old. Her sophomore album, “One in a Million,” which quickly achieved double platinum status, solidified her status as an R&B icon, earning her Grammy nominations for tracks like “Are You That Somebody” and “Try Again.” She was also known for her collaborations with artists such as Missy Elliott, Timbaland, and controversially, R. Kelly.
Tragically, Aaliyah’s life was cut short at the age of 22 in a plane crash in the Bahamas after filming her “Rock the Boat” music video in 2001.
Mattel’s listing for the doll noted, “Aaliyah’s smooth vocals and innovative sound helped shape ’90s R&B, and her influence on music and fashion continues to be felt today,” highlighting her lasting impact on the industry. Other dolls in the same musical series also include icons like Tina Turner and Stevie Nicks, revealing a continued homage to legendary artists.
This tribute to Aaliyah not only recognizes her contribution to music but also amplifies her enduring legacy, reminding us of the talent and creativity she brought into the world.
