A Sweet New Tearful: Rosh Hashanah Reflections Amidst Chaos

Rosh Hashanah is a holiday often filled with mixed emotions—part celebration, part reflection. This year, however, those feelings are more pronounced than ever.

As Jews observe the holiday tonight, the backdrop includes potential missile strikes between Iran and Israel, alongside the looming anniversary of the October 7 attacks and ongoing hostage situations involving Hamas. Opinions differ on the recent conflict, particularly regarding the Gaza War and Israeli governmental decisions. Yet many find themselves feeling disoriented, anxious, and uncertain about the future.

A friend recently sent a Rosh Hashanah message intended to convey wishes for a “sweet new year full of good adventures,” but due to a slip or autocorrect, it read “a sweet new tearful.” This perfectly encapsulates the current mood.

The war in Gaza has deeply affected American Jews, but the escalation of the conflict makes it even more challenging to navigate. Regardless of one’s stance on the Gaza situation, the loss of thousands of lives—both Palestinian and Israeli—along with the continued detention of hostages, has left many emotionally drained. For many liberal and centrist Jews, it is past time for the Israeli government to bring the hostages home and establish a ceasefire.

This newest round of conflict is distinct, as Israel’s responses to Hezbollah have been more focused than those in Gaza. The loss of innocent lives remains tragic, especially among Lebanese civilians, but the scale of suffering does not compare to Gaza.

Hezbollah, often described in negative terms, does not represent the Palestinian people but rather Iran’s interests in regional power. While strategizing the best approaches to counter Hezbollah remains complex, many progressives have noted Israel’s targeted actions against Hezbollah communication networks as a commendable counter-terrorism strategy.

Yet, there remains skepticism towards the Netanyahu government’s intentions. Although Prime Minister Netanyahu seems to be avoiding a ground invasion of Southern Lebanon, public trust is low due to his previous decisions and the ongoing war in Gaza.

Iran’s military response following Israeli actions against Hezbollah was anticipated. However, those close to the conflict—including family and friends in Israel—are deeply troubled by the fear and uncertainty expressed in various accounts. This latest phase of unrest, while potentially less devastating than the Gaza War, stirs anxiety about future developments. Will there be further escalation from either side?

Emotions are contradictory: heartbreak, anxiety, support and skepticism towards Israel, concern for innocent lives, and the ongoing plight of Gaza residents and hostage situations weigh heavily. These complex feelings arrive alongside the invitation to reflect on personal actions during this season of self-examination.

Life’s additional stresses, such as the upcoming American elections, climate change impacts, rising antisemitism, and parenting challenges, add layers to this emotional tapestry.

While recognizing the profound challenges faced by many, both in Israel and the broader region, it’s essential to acknowledge that understanding one’s own emotional landscape is valuable. The Jewish New Year invites us to reflect on cycles of time and the universality of enduring themes of love and solace.

This blend of chaos and calm will continue to shape the upcoming year. One can only hope for clarity ahead. Shana Tova.
