In celebration of the 50th anniversary of women’s sports at Arkansas State, the women’s basketball program recently unveiled its All-50 Year Team. This distinguished team is composed of remarkable players, including 12 all-conference selections, six inductees into the A-State Athletics Hall of Honor, three Players of the Year from the Sun Belt Conference, and two All-American honorees, including a second-round draft pick in the WNBA.
The journey of the women’s basketball program began in the 1974-75 season with Kay Woodiel at the helm. Initially, the team competed in just 10 games, recording a modest 2-8 record but made significant strides in the following year with 16 wins. The current 2023-24 season marks a special milestone as the team dedicates itself to honoring 50 years of women’s sports throughout the 2024-25 home season, highlighted by a “Ladies Day” game against Jackson State on December 7.
The accolades of individual players are commendable—several have achieved significant career milestones, including appearances in the WNIT and impressive scoring achievements, with numerous players ranking among the all-time points leaders at A-State. Additionally, some players have gone on to have successful careers internationally, showcasing their talents beyond college basketball.
This reflection on 50 years of achievement not only honors the past but also celebrates the continued growth and success of women’s sports at Arkansas State, inspiring future generations of female athletes. As the season unfolds, fans are encouraged to support the Red Wolves and be a part of this historic celebration.
In summary, A-State is set to celebrate a pivotal moment in its athletic history as the women’s basketball program honors 50 years of competition while kicking off the new home season. Such celebrations serve to inspire the next wave of athletes and promote the growth of women’s sports overall.
