The Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) recently hosted its inaugural family ball, a festive gathering aimed at fostering a close-knit community around the museum. President Lionel Sauvage expressed his excitement for the event, which he hopes to make a regular occurrence every other year. He highlighted the role of Jean-Victor Meyers in bringing the concept of a summer ball to fruition, alongside acclaimed director Sofia Coppola, who contributed her artistic vision.
Sauvage reflected on the connection between the museum and the Coppola family, noting that during the pandemic, Thomas Mars, Coppola’s husband, utilized the museum’s space to rehearse with his band Phoenix. He emphasized that the event was less about fundraising and more about celebrating friendships and joyous connections.
Coppola, as the artistic director, set out to create an inviting atmosphere reminiscent of a summer ball rather than a formal fundraiser. She drew inspiration from the elegance of past hostesses, particularly Countess Jacqueline de Ribes, and wanted the event to evoke a sense of personal celebration surrounded by beauty and artistry. The evening featured delightful elements such as rosy table settings, a menu crafted by chef Bertrand Grébaut, and a captivating performance by soprano Pretty Yende, who dazzled in a vintage Balenciaga gown.
Notably in attendance was actress Kirsten Dunst, who shared her enthusiasm for the event, describing it as a familial gathering. She particularly enjoyed Yende’s performance, highlighting the celebratory spirit of the night.
The festivities continued with an after-party where students from Paris’s prestigious fashion and design schools mingled, and the band Phoenix entertained guests, curated by cocktail maestro Colin Field. Attendees expressed joy at the evening’s vibe, with one participant appreciating the encouragement to dress elegantly and feel their best.
This event not only marked a new tradition for MAD but also celebrated the intersection of art, community, and friendship, underscoring the positive impact of creative gatherings in cultural spaces. The sentiments shared by attendees reflect a hopeful desire for more such joyous celebrations in the future.
