This marks the first rare earth minerals mine to open in the country in over 70 years, as well as the first new coal mine in Wyoming in decades. Ramaco Resources, which purchased the mine for $2 million, anticipates that its potential worth could reach billions in the coming years due to the essential minerals it contains.
The Brook Mine, located near Sheridan in the Powder River Basin, could play a crucial role in reducing the U.S.’s dependency on foreign sources for these vital materials, which are critical for defense systems, batteries, and renewable energy technologies. Rare earths like scandium, gallium, and germanium, found at the mine, are increasingly recognized as significant geopolitical assets. Currently, the U.S. relies heavily on imports, particularly from China, which dominates the global supply and refining markets for these elements.
The groundbreaking ceremony drew notable figures including U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright, Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon, and several state senators. They highlighted the importance of domestic production of coal and rare earth elements, emphasizing a shift towards more extractive energy practices as favored by the Trump administration.
Ramaco’s CEO, Randy Atkins, expressed optimism about the project, stating that the mine could drastically change the landscape of rare earth production in the country. “It’s a complete domestic supply line. We can mine it here. We can process it here,” he said, indicating plans for a pilot refining facility to be operational by summer, with a more permanent facility anticipated by 2026.
In addition, other rare earth mineral discoveries across the United States, including a sizable gallium deposit found in Montana, showcase the potential for increased domestic production. There is hope that enhanced domestic operations can mitigate environmental impacts associated with rare earth mining and processing.
