Peacock has officially unveiled the first look at “The Paper,” an anticipated mockumentary series that shares a universe with the beloved “The Office.” The sneak peek image was revealed during NBCUniversal’s upfront presentation to advertisers in New York on Monday, alongside cast appearances by Domhnall Gleeson, Sabrina Impacciatore, and Oscar Nuñez, the latter reprising his role from “The Office.”
Scheduled to air in September, the exact premiere date for “The Paper” is still to be announced. The show’s narrative revolves around a documentary crew, famously known for chronicling the Dunder Mifflin Scranton branch, as they transition to a new subject involving a historic newspaper and its struggling publisher.
The trailer showcased the setting in the Toledo Truth-Teller offices, featuring Oscar Nuñez’s character as an accountant who is less than thrilled to see the documentary crew again. Impacciatore portrays the managing editor, while Gleeson takes on the role of an enthusiastic newcomer.
In addition to the prominent trio, the cast includes Chelsea Frei, Melvin Gregg, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Alex Edelman, Ramona Young, and Tim Key. The series is co-created by Greg Daniels, known for adapting “The Office” for American audiences, along with Michael Koman. They serve as executive producers alongside “The Office” creators Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, and others, under Universal Television.
“The Paper” is one of many scripted projects currently in development at Peacock, which also includes a new animated adaptation of “Ted,” a series reboot of “The Burbs” led by Keke Palmer, the drama “All Her Fault” starring Sarah Snook, and the comedy “Dig” featuring Amy Poehler.
This new series presents an exciting opportunity to revisit a familiar format and characters, while exploring fresh narratives in a contemporary setting. Fans of “The Office” can look forward to the unique blend of humor and heart that this series is expected to deliver.
