A Legend Remembered: The Legacy of Roberta Flack

Roberta Flack, the iconic R&B singer renowned for her timeless hits such as “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” and “Killing Me Softly With His Song,” has passed away at the age of 88. Her family issued a heartfelt statement confirming her peaceful death on February 24, 2025, saying, “We are heartbroken that the glorious Roberta Flack passed away this morning.” In recent years, Flack had been battling motor neurone disease, which ultimately hindered her ability to sing.

Born in North Carolina and raised in Arlington, Virginia, Flack’s musical journey began as a classical pianist. By the age of 15, she earned a full scholarship to Howard University and honed her talents in music. She initially pursued classical music but often performed pop standards during her side gigs accompanying opera singers. Her unique blend of classical training and love for R&B set the stage for her impactful career.

Flack’s breakthrough came later in life, with her emotionally charged rendition of Ewan MacColl’s “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” which became a defining moment after being featured in Clint Eastwood’s 1971 film “Play Misty For Me.” This song won the Grammy for Song of the Year, and she followed up with another Grammy-winning hit, “Killing Me Softly With His Song,” in 1974. Her career achievements continued with a top hit “Feel Like Makin’ Love” and collaborations with notable artists like Donny Hathaway and Miles Davis.

Beyond her music, Flack was deeply dedicated to education, spending time teaching at the Roberta Flack School of Music in New York. Her commitment to social justice and activism was evident, underscored by Reverend Jesse Jackson’s description of her as “socially relevant and politically unafraid.” Flack’s contributions were recognized in 2020 when she received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, an accolade she described as a validation of her musical storytelling.

Flack leaves behind a legacy defined by her soulful voice and ability to connect with audiences on an emotional level. She once expressed, “A person with true soul is one who can take anybody’s song and transcend all the flaws,” highlighting her belief in the power of music to convey deep feelings.

Roberta Flack’s influence extended beyond her era, inspiring generations of musicians and music lovers. Her artistry will continue to resonate, ensuring that her contributions to music are not forgotten.
