A Historic Homage: MLB All-Star Game to Honor Baseball Legends

This year’s MLB All-Star Game, set for July 14 and 15 in Atlanta, is generating excitement not just for the matchup of stars, but for a special tribute woven into the event. The Home Run Derby on July 14 will commemorate the legendary achievements of Babe Ruth and Hank Aaron through the players’ uniforms, marking the significance of the dates numerically linked to their storied home run totals: 714 and 715.

Hall of Fame pitcher and MLB special assistant to the commissioner, CC Sabathia, proposed this thoughtful tribute to honor these baseball icons. Traditionally, players wear their team uniforms during the Derby, but this time, participants will don special All-Star uniforms featuring Ruth’s famous No. 3 for American League players and Aaron’s No. 44 for National League players.

Sabathia’s inspiration for this unique concept was sparked by the date’s connection to baseball history and the fact that Atlanta is closely linked to both legends. Aaron notably played in Atlanta for nine seasons and broke the all-time home run record there, while Ruth achieved his 714th home run with the Braves in Boston.

For Sabathia, the tribute is more than just numbers; it’s about storytelling and ensuring that baseball’s rich history and the legacies of its greatest players are honored. He expressed the importance of recognizing Aaron’s impact on the city and the game, reflecting on how both legends paved the way for future generations of players.

Current home runs leader Cal Raleigh of the Seattle Mariners will also participate in the homage by switching from his usual No. 29 to Ruth’s No. 3 during the Derby. The significance of these numbers ties deeply into baseball lore, and Sabathia hopes this tribute will engage younger fans and inspire curiosity about the sport’s historic moments.

The 2025 All-Star Game is shaping up to be a memorable event that not only celebrates contemporary talent but also pays homage to the legendary figures who helped define baseball. This thoughtful blend of history and modern gameplay could spark renewed interest in the sport’s rich narrative.
