A Heartfelt Tribute: Remembering the Gaudreau Brothers at Nationwide Arena

Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew Gaudreau were honored during the Columbus Blue Jackets’ home opener on October 15, 2024, against the Florida Panthers. The event took place in memory of Johnny and Matthew, who tragically lost their lives in August due to an alleged drunk driving incident.

At Nationwide Arena, Johnny Gaudreau’s wife, Meredith, was accompanied by their two-year-old daughter Noa and seven-month-old son Johnny, both wearing jerseys bearing the number 13. The family took to the ice as a banner honoring Johnny Gaudreau was unveiled. Emotion visibly overcame Meredith as she watched Noa wave at the banner.

A tribute video showcasing Johnny’s journey in hockey, along with personal moments from his life, was screened. In a heartfelt message, Meredith, who is expecting their third child, expressed her desire for the event to be uplifting rather than sorrowful. “I want you all to be inspired by the life that John lived,” she said, encouraging everyone to cherish family and embrace the sport Johnny loved.

The tribute also included a slideshow of family photos and music, creating a warm atmosphere as fans cheered “Johnny hockey” when the teams took to the ice. The event saw attendance from Johnny’s family, including his parents, and Matthew’s widow, Madeline, who is also expecting their first child.

Prior to the game, a public service announcement reminded attendees not to drink and drive. Throughout the game, Blue Jackets players wore a “13” patch on their jerseys in memory of Johnny, a tribute that will continue for the season. All attendees received a “13” patch as a sign of solidarity.

In a touching gesture, the team left a spot open on the ice for Johnny and took 13 seconds off the game clock to honor him. The arena showcased a special tribute for the Gaudreau brothers, featuring jerseys and memorabilia, as funds were raised for the John and Matthew Gaudreau Foundation through various activities.

The brothers were riding bicycles when they were struck by an alleged drunk driver while preparing for their sister’s wedding in their hometown. Recently, Madeline held a baby shower in memory of Matthew, incorporating decor that honored his legacy, stating how grateful she was for the support surrounding her unborn son.

The Columbus Blue Jackets and their families also came together last month to celebrate Noa’s second birthday, displaying a giant sign reading, “Happy 2nd Birthday Noa!”
