Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew Gaudreau were honored during the Columbus Blue Jackets’ opening home game on October 15 against the Florida Panthers. This tribute came in the wake of the tragic deaths of the two brothers, who were killed by an alleged drunk driver in August.

Meredith Gaudreau, Johnny’s wife, attended the event with their children, 2-year-old Noa and 7-month-old Johnny, both wearing jerseys featuring the number 13. The family appeared on the ice as a banner bearing Johnny’s number was raised, with Meredith visibly emotional as Noa waved at the tribute.

A video tribute showcased Johnny’s early life and hockey career, including memories of his marriage and family. Meredith, who is expecting their third child, expressed her desire for attendees to feel inspired by Johnny’s life rather than sad, encouraging them to cherish their families and the love of the game.

A slideshow filled with family moments was accompanied by songs like “Memory Lane” and “Small Town Girl.” As the teams took the ice, fans cheered for “Johnny hockey,” honoring his legacy.

Family members, including Johnny’s parents and Matthew’s widow, Madeline, were in attendance. A public service announcement was shared, urging people who choose to drink to refrain from driving.

Throughout the season, the Blue Jackets players will wear a “13” patch on their jerseys, a tribute to Johnny. Fans who attended the game also received the patch.

During the game, the team made a poignant gesture by omitting a left winger on the ice and running the clock down by 13 seconds in remembrance of Johnny. The arena featured a special tribute with jerseys and memorabilia dedicated to the brothers.

The tragic accident occurred when the brothers were riding bikes in their hometown, en route to their sister’s wedding. Madeline has recently honored her late husband during a baby shower, acknowledging his absence while celebrating their impending arrival.

Last month, the Blue Jackets celebrated Johnny and Meredith’s daughter Noa’s second birthday, displaying a giant lawn sign to mark the occasion.
