During his acceptance speech for the Democratic vice presidential nomination this week, Tim Walz did not mention disabilities. However, it was his son, Gus, who captured attention with an emotional display. Seventeen-year-old Gus was seen in tears alongside his mother, Gwen, and sister, Hope, as they watched Minnesota Governor Walz speak at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
In his speech, Walz expressed his love for his family, saying, “Hope, Gus, and Gwen, you are my entire world, and I love you.” Gus then stood up, pointed to his father, and declared, “I love you,” nodding enthusiastically, exclaiming, “That’s my dad!”
This poignant moment followed the couple’s recent revelation to People Magazine that Gus has a nonverbal learning disorder, ADHD, and an anxiety disorder, which went undiagnosed until he approached his teenage years. The Walzes shared that Gus had always shown different preferences compared to his peers, favoring video games and solitary activities.
“Like many American families, it took us time to learn how best to support Gus,” they said. They emphasized that their son’s condition should not be viewed as a limitation but as a unique strength. They described him as brilliant and attentive to details that might go unnoticed by others.
Katy Neas, CEO of The Arc, expressed hope that the visibility of a major political candidate who has a child with disabilities will help raise awareness about the needs of this community. She pointed out that one in six children experiences a developmental disability, and their experiences often go unrecognized in broader discussions. Neas highlighted the importance of showcasing families with disabilities, stating that such representation sends a valuable message about inclusion and the contributions of those with disabilities.
Maria Town, president and CEO of the American Association of People with Disabilities, acknowledged the warmth and support evident in the Walz family’s dynamic. However, she voiced concerns over potential online mockery of Gus’s reactions during the convention. Town urged for measures to ensure Gus’s emotional and physical safety as the election approaches, emphasizing the importance of treating his story with respect and openness to foster understanding.
