Brookfield Zoo has sadly announced the passing of Malena, a cherished Amur tiger who had been part of the zoo since 2020. The decision to euthanize her was made after veterinary specialists determined that her kidney function was severely compromised, leading to dangerous heart arrhythmias.

In a statement, the zoo explained that a necropsy indicated a cancerous condition affecting Malena’s kidneys. While she had been a beloved member of the zoo community, caregivers were heartbroken, as she had formed a strong bond with them, known for her calm demeanor and majestic presence. Malena notably made headlines in 2021 when she became the first Amur tiger to successfully undergo a total hip replacement, showcasing her resilience and the dedication of her care team.

The passing of Malena is a poignant reminder of the struggles faced by critically endangered species like the Amur tiger, with efforts being made to continue the support and care of Whirl, the other Amur tiger at the zoo. The zoo remains committed to providing exceptional care to these animals, even in the face of such challenges.

The zoo community will deeply miss Malena, especially her unique “singing” and affectionate ways. Her story highlights the importance of wildlife conservation and the connection that can be fostered between animals and their caregivers, offering a narrative of hope and commitment to the preservation of endangered species.
