A First-Year Journey: Cy Rae Campbell Balances Volleyball and Heritage

The first year of college is a transformative experience, filled with excitement and new challenges. First-year volleyball player Cy Rae Campbell from Wake Forest University is navigating this journey while also cherishing her roots as a member of the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska. As she embraces her new life in Winston-Salem for the 2024-25 school year, she not only focuses on her studies and athletics but also values her cultural heritage especially during National Native American Heritage Month in November.

Originally from Olathe, Kansas, Cy’s upbringing was characterized by a deep sense of community and a love for sports. Growing up, she played various activities, but her passion for volleyball flourished while she attended Heritage Christian Academy, where she became one of the top players in the nation, winning state championships throughout her high school career. For Cy, it was never just about personal achievement; it was the camaraderie and teamwork that made her victories meaningful.

When selecting a college, Cy felt an immediate connection to Wake Forest and committed early in her recruitment. Moving nearly 1,000 miles from her hometown brought new experiences, such as adapting to the warmer climate and the inclusive environment that embodies Wake Forest’s Pro Humanitate motto.

As she progresses through the second half of the Atlantic Coast Conference season, Cy has already noted the heightened level of competition in collegiate volleyball and is actively adjusting her game to keep pace with older, more experienced players. The learning curve is steep as she delves deeper into game strategy, studying opponents to gain a competitive edge.

Looking ahead, Cy remains focused on her academics and personal goals. She recognizes the importance of balancing her time between athletics and social life while eagerly anticipating opportunities for growth during the offseason.

The story of Cy Rae Campbell serves as a reminder of the resilience and determination many students face in their first year. With her commitment to excelling both academically and athletically, combined with a strong sense of cultural pride, she embodies the hopes and ambitions that come with starting this new chapter in life. This positive journey showcases how first-year students can adapt, grow, and thrive in a new environment, paving the way for even greater achievements in the future.
