George Rose’s journey is a powerful testament to resilience, devotion, and faith as he navigated his role as an executive with the New York Yankees while battling cancer.
Rose was a devoted member of St. Raphael’s Parish in Hamilton, New Jersey, and actively engaged in the Diocese of Trenton. He held significant positions, including serving as a board member for the Catholic Men for Jesus Christ and co-hosting a radio program, Brothers in Arms, for Domestic Church Media. He was known for his strong faith and was a central figure in the lives of those around him.
As a husband to Cari and a father to Sean, who recently graduated from Hargrave Military Academy and will attend the College of the Holy Cross, George balanced family life with his responsibilities at the Yankees, overseeing operations in the Pacific Rim and often traveling to Japan, a country he cherished.
Tragically, George passed away in August 2023, following a courageous fight against stage 4 lung cancer diagnosed in February 2017. Despite initial grim expectations, which projected a less than 5% five-year survival rate, George’s unwavering trust in God played a crucial role in his battle. His rallying mantra, “Jesus, I trust in you,” became his source of strength during the challenging journey.
Upon his diagnosis, George remained remarkably positive despite his condition, quickly adopting a proactive approach to his health. This included a strong dedication to the Divine Mercy devotion and forging a connection with Blessed Michael Sopoćko, St. Faustina’s spiritual guide. In 2018, George journeyed to the Shrine of Divine Mercy in Poland, embracing his faith even further.
His lifestyle shifted significantly as he committed to a healthier diet and sought treatment options. Following a call from Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman, he enrolled in a clinical trial at Memorial Sloan Kettering. The medical team was impressed by the effectiveness of his proactive measures, noting a reduction in tumor size even before treatment commenced, and George emerged as one of the trial’s most responsive patients.
However, by late 2022, George’s health took a downturn after a bout of pneumonia. He passed away in the following year. I was privileged to share final moments with him, praying the Divine Mercy chaplet. Beyond his treatment journey, George’s daily struggle with his health mirrored a deep spiritual battle that saw him overcome numerous obstacles with faith and determination.
Though he had his challenges, especially during difficult times influenced by medication, George’s life epitomized a journey of sanctification enriched by his faith. He faced his struggles, sought forgiveness, and continually rose to meet his challenges.
George Rose was not just a formidable figure in his professional life; he embodied mercy and grace. Through the prayers and support surrounding him, he is believed to have encountered a warm welcome that echoes the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
