Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem and a newly elevated cardinal, has a unique background rooted in Italy yet deeply intertwined with the Holy Land. Born in Bergamo in 1965, he grew up in a strongly Catholic environment. He entered the Franciscan minor seminary in Bologna at 11 and was ordained in 1990, shortly after which he moved to the Holy Land.
While studying at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Pizzaballa found himself as the only Christian in his class. This experience prompted engaging discussions about faith and spirituality with his Jewish peers, enriching his understanding of Jesus and the complexities of the Resurrection. This reflected his realization that the teachings of Jesus are profound and cannot easily be distilled into comprehensible explanations.
In 1995, Pizzaballa contributed to the Catholic community by overseeing the publication of the Roman Missal in Hebrew. His commitment deepened when he joined the Custody of the Holy Land in 1999, eventually becoming the Custos responsible for the Franciscans in the region. His interactions with key Church figures have also marked his path; a notable moment was a comical encounter with Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires that illuminated his humble nature.
In 2016, he was appointed the apostolic administrator of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, tackling substantial fiscal deficits related to a university project in Jordan. Pizzaballa’s leadership has garnered recognition, and in 2020, he was named Latin Patriarch. Following his elevation to cardinal in 2023, he expressed his readiness to negotiate for the release of hostages taken by Hamas during the recent Gaza conflict, underscoring his commitment to peace.
Pizzaballa also reflects on the shifts in religious practice, particularly the decline of Catholicism in Italy, suggesting a transformative chapter for the Church.
