Former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher James Paxton, who faced a challenging career marred by injuries, is set to take the mound one final time as he represents Team Canada in the World Baseball Classic. At 37 years old, Paxton’s journey through Major League Baseball included stints with various teams, notably the Seattle Mariners, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Boston Red Sox, culminating in a championship with the Dodgers in the 2024 World Series.

Paxton’s career, which is highlighted by 73 wins, a 3.77 ERA, and over 1,000 strikeouts in 177 starts, was significantly impacted by injuries, limiting him to five games or fewer in each season from 2020 to 2022. Despite these setbacks, he is determined to end his professional journey on a high note with the World Baseball Classic.

Having taken more than a year away from the sport, Paxton faced the decision of whether to return when he received an invitation to join Team Canada. “When he was invited to join Team Canada this winter, Paxton hadn’t picked up a baseball for over a year,” wrote Mike Vorel of The Seattle Times. “Ready or not, Paxton’s finale is about to begin.”

Team Canada is set to kick off the tournament against Colombia, and while Paxton may not take the mound during the opening games against Colombia and Panama, fans can anticipate seeing him in action during the tournament to conclude his career.

Paxton’s commitment to his national team reflects his passion for the game and determination to give back to the sport that shaped his life, making this return a celebrated occasion for both him and baseball enthusiasts.
