FARGO — As North Dakota State University (NDSU) prepares to face off in the quarterfinals of the Summit League tournament at the Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, the Bison bring substantial experience to the court rather than youthful exuberance. With a seasoned roster boasting a wealth of gameplay knowledge, the team is poised for a strong showing.

Forward Noah Feddersen pointed out that numerous close victories have been attributed to the players’ experience. Key players like seniors Tay Smith and Markhi Strickland, both 24, demonstrate that maturity can significantly influence game outcomes. Feddersen and fellow guard Damari Wheeler-Thomas are also in their fourth year, contributing to a roster filled with players seasoned in high-pressure situations.

Head coach Dave Richman emphasized the value of experience, noting that his players possess a vast array of game knowledge, which has contributed to their success this season. This year’s Bison squad has seen a notable boost from graduate transfers and returning players who have participated significantly over the years. Wheeler-Thomas and Feddersen participated in Senior Day last Saturday, both with a year of eligibility remaining, proving their continued commitment to the program.

The Bison have excelled this season, winning seven games by five points or fewer. Wheeler-Thomas credited the team’s maturity for their ability to thrive in nail-biting finishes. The current roster will soon welcome five new recruits from high school, while Richman utilizes the transfer portal effectively, evidenced by Trevian Carson’s recent selection to the all-Summit League first team.

Feddersen has played a pivotal role since redshirting his freshman year, with a notable turnaround following a mid-season slump. His transition to a pivotal bench player saw him awarded the Summit’s Sixth Man of the Year, which enhances his marketability, especially in today’s NIL landscape.

As the Bison prepare for the tournament, they carry momentum from setting a modern era record of 24 regular-season wins, surpassing past records. Their victory against the University of North Dakota, witnessed by a record crowd of over 5,400 at the Scheels Center, underscores their potential as a formidable contender.

With aspirations to make an NCAA Tournament appearance, the team remains focused on achieving their goal. Wheeler-Thomas expressed the desire to finish the season strong, implying that after years of dedication, this could be the year they finally break through to the tournament. The combination of experienced leadership and a solid supporting cast lays a promising foundation as they head into this pivotal moment of their season.
