Residing in Navitilevu, within the Noikoro district, Ms. Taina has fully embraced rural life since her marriage, raising her seven children alongside her late husband. Despite her frail appearance, she leads an active lifestyle, awakening before dawn to fulfill her family’s needs by engaging in various daily tasks that reflect her intense commitment to her family and community.
Ms. Taina enjoys collecting firewood, washing clothes by the river, and weaving mats. Her proactive approach exemplifies the traditional values of her community. She states, “I don’t like to sit idle and prefer to be active as it keeps me strong and healthy.” To her, housework is not just a chore; it is a fundamental way to support her family, as she also plants cassava and prepares pandanus leaves for weaving, ensuring that her family is well-fed and nurtured.
Washing clothes in the river is a cherished tradition for Ms. Taina and many in her village. “Most of us are raised doing laundry by the river. It’s been our way of life, and we continue to do it even with modern conveniences,” she explains, highlighting the importance of community ties and a connection to nature that has remained steadfast despite advancements in technology.
