Hundreds celebrated the 77th Republic Day of India at India House in Suva, a significant event for the Indian community in Fiji. The gathering underscored the importance of this day for Indians worldwide, as highlighted by Suneet Mehta, the Indian High Commissioner to Fiji. He expressed that Republic Day is a momentous occasion not only for those residing in India but also for the Indian diaspora spread across the globe.
Mehta emphasized the reverence that Fijians of Indian origin hold for the day, which commemorates the adoption of the Indian Constitution in 1950. This landmark event is integral to upholding values such as liberty, justice, and dignity for Indians both at home and abroad. He noted, “It’s really a special occasion for me to welcome all the Indians and friends of India here today,” wishing everyone happiness, peace, and prosperity on this significant day.
Republic Day serves as an opportunity for many to reflect on their shared heritage and the contributions that the Indian community has made to Fiji’s multicultural society. Shridhar Pathare, the General Manager of LICI Fiji, resonated with these sentiments, expressing appreciation for the prevalent love and joy within the Indian diaspora. He remarked, “Indo-Fijians belong here, with their roots in India, carrying forward the values and cultures they brought with them.”
As India celebrates its 77 years as a republic, the Indian High Commission reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening connections with the Indian community, promoting unity, shared identity, and lasting bonds that transcend borders. This dedication is a testament to the enduring relationship between India and Fiji, reflecting a vibrant multicultural tapestry that enriches both nations.
