Ame Nasukurewa’s entrepreneurial journey stands as a testament to the power of hard work and family commitment cultivated over two decades. Now at the age of 72, Mr. Nasukurewa, originally hailing from Nakorotubu Village in Ra, made a significant life change in 2005 by moving to Vakabalea in Navua, driven by the aspiration of creating a better future for his family.
Upon settling in Navua, he purchased a piece of land and committed himself to traditional farming, growing a diverse range of vegetables and root crops. Leaning on agricultural knowledge handed down through generations, he transformed the land into his main source of income. “At that time, I wanted something better for my family, so I took the risk and came to Navua,” he remembered, reflecting on the early struggles he faced.
Starting from ground zero, Mr. Nasukurewa encountered various challenges while rehabilitating the land, but he remained steadfast. His daily life revolves around farming, and despite his advancing age, he continues to wake up early each day to tend to his crops, showcasing his strong work ethic.
His wife plays an essential role in this venture, selling produce at a roadside stand alongside other mini-market vendors, catering to local customers and travelers. “My wife helps a lot. While I work on the farm, she sells our vegetables. We work as a team,” Mr. Nasukurewa noted, emphasizing the significance of partnership in their success.
Throughout his journey, he has faced physical fatigue, financial hurdles, and the unpredictability of weather patterns. Nevertheless, his resilience has allowed him to overcome these challenges. “There were many hard days. Sometimes crops failed, sometimes money was short, but I endured everything that came my way,” he affirmed.
He finds joy in leading an active and self-sufficient life. With his children now pursuing their own careers, he remains driven to contribute to his family. “I can still work on my farm, and I am thankful for my health. Even though my children have their own jobs now, I still want to provide and support my family in any way I can,” he conveyed.
Mr. Nasukurewa also aims to inspire younger generations to understand the value of hard work and farming. He believes that agriculture can offer a fruitful livelihood when pursued with dedication. “Farming is not easy, but it teaches patience and discipline. If you respect the land, it will take care of you,” he expressed.
His roadside market has grown increasingly popular, especially during weekends when customer traffic swells. This steady patronage has played a crucial role in sustaining the livelihoods of both him and his wife through the sale of their fresh produce. Gratitude for community support emanates from Mr. Nasukurewa, who recognizes the importance of loyal customers: “I am very thankful to everyone who supports our small market business. Their support helps us continue our work and provide for our family.”
