Bula Si’a! My name is Tsuyoshi Ishizawa, a JICA Volunteer working in the Clinical Governance Unit at Labasa Hospital. With 14 years of experience as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist focusing on infectious diseases and infection control, I am excited to share my journey from the snowy landscapes of Yamagata, Japan, to the sunny shores of Fiji.
My current role involves implementing the Japanese methodologies of 5S–KAIZEN–Total Quality Management (TQM), concepts rooted in the renowned Toyota Production System but tailored for healthcare settings. The 5S principles—Sort, Set, Shine, Standardize, Sustain—are fundamental in fostering an organized atmosphere where abnormalities can be swiftly identified.
These principles not only form the basis for continuous improvement (KAIZEN) but also pave the way towards achieving total quality management (TQM). My responsibilities include conducting regular ward rounds to evaluate adherence to the 5S framework, managing the medical supply inventory by checking expiry dates, and leading workshops aimed at enhancing staff skills and deepening their understanding of these methodologies.
Through practical demonstrations, I illustrate how straightforward actions such as labeling and color-coding medications can significantly reduce errors and bolster patient safety. I am continually impressed by the dedication and enthusiasm of Fiji’s healthcare professionals; their positive attitudes inspire me every day.
Although the implementation of the 5S methodology may appear minimal, its ability to transform the landscape of healthcare quality and safety in Fiji is profound. As we strive for a brighter future in healthcare, these efforts mark an essential step towards enhancing service delivery in the region.
