At the age of 54, Katarina Senabu has earned the title of the 2025 National Woman Spice Farmer of the Year, showcasing that successful agriculture involves not only hard work but also smart management practices. Based in Koronivia, Senabu has developed an integrated farming system spanning five acres that incorporates vegetable cultivation, hydroponics, and tilapia fish farming, ensuring she has a steady supply of food and income throughout the year. Within this diverse setup, she dedicates four acres to ginger production, delivering approximately 30 tonnes of this sought-after spice to the market.

Senabu’s roots in Savusavu and her upbringing in a farming family have profoundly shaped her values and commitment to agriculture. She emphasizes the importance of women believing in their own capabilities, starting small, and persisting in their ventures.

Her inspiring journey will be showcased at the Women in Primary Industries Symposium 2026, an event supported by the World Bank’s ENABLE Program and various allied organizations. Chief Agricultural Economist Sainiana Kirisitiana highlighted the importance of empowering women in agriculture, noting that providing access to information, financial resources, and market opportunities can significantly bolster food security and contribute to poverty alleviation.

Senabu’s accomplishments serve as a beacon of hope, demonstrating the transformative effects of supporting women in farming. By prioritizing education and creating avenues for opportunities, we can foster a more sustainable and prosperous future for the agricultural sector.
