49ers Receiver Shot in Union Square: What Happened?

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall was shot in the chest during an attempted robbery in San Francisco on Saturday, according to authorities and team representatives. The 49ers confirmed that Pearsall is in serious but stable condition, adding that he was able to communicate after being injured.

Mayor London Breed stated via social media that the incident occurred in the Union Square area of downtown, with police identifying the suspect as a 17-year-old boy. The mayor noted that the San Francisco Police Department responded quickly, leading to the arrest of the shooter.

The police reported that they arrived at the scene on Geary Street and Grant Avenue around 3:37 p.m., where two individuals had sustained injuries from an altercation. Police Chief Bill Scott explained that the suspect attempted an armed robbery against Pearsall, leading to a struggle that resulted in gunfire hitting both Pearsall and the suspect.

At least two shots were fired during the incident, according to Scott, who also mentioned that the suspect is from Tracy, California, located about 60 miles east of San Francisco. Both Pearsall and the suspect were transported to the hospital. San Francisco County Supervisor Aaron Peskin later confirmed that Pearsall had been stabilized.

The suspect was apprehended as he attempted to flee, and the firearm used in the shooting was recovered. District Attorney Brooke Jenkins stated that the teen would face charges in juvenile court.

“This was a terrible and rare incident in Union Square, and our thoughts are with Ricky Pearsall and his family,” Breed communicated during a news conference, expressing hope for Pearsall’s recovery and future on the field. The 49ers echoed similar sentiments, offering their thoughts and prayers to Pearsall and his family.

The incident has raised concerns about crime and homelessness, key issues in local politics, especially as Peskin challenges Breed for the mayoral position. He has advocated for strict measures against crime while emphasizing the need for comprehensive solutions.

Breed asserted that violence like Saturday’s “will not be tolerated,” and Scott confirmed that additional police resources have been allocated to Union Square in response to ongoing security concerns.

Pearsall has been sidelined this preseason due to hamstring and shoulder injuries.
