The San Francisco 49ers are set to rely on veteran middle linebacker Eric Kendricks as they enter the NFL playoffs this weekend. This decision comes after head coach Kyle Shanahan announced that Tatum Bethune, who stepped up in place of injured All-Pro Fred Warner, will be sidelined for the remainder of the season due to a torn groin muscle.
The 49ers, securing the sixth seed in the NFC with a strong 12-5 record, are gearing up to take on the third-seeded Philadelphia Eagles, who finished with an 11-6 record. Coach Shanahan revealed that both left tackle Trent Williams, who is dealing with a hamstring issue, and wide receiver Ricky Pearsall, battling ankle and knee injuries, would be evaluated throughout the week to determine their availability for the crucial postseason clash.
Bethune had a notable season, tallying 94 tackles after filling in for Warner, who could potentially return later in the playoffs if the team advances. Kendricks, a seasoned 11-year NFL veteran, joined the 49ers practice squad in late November and will take Bethune’s position on the active roster for the playoffs. Shanahan expressed confidence in Kendricks, noting his contributions during recent games. Kendricks made his first start with the team during the regular-season finale against the Seahawks, where he recorded four tackles.
In addition to the linebacker situation, the team is facing various injury concerns. Weakside linebacker Dee Winters is being assessed for an ankle injury sustained against Seattle, while he leads the team with 101 tackles this season. Other linebackers, including Luke Gifford, are also dealing with injuries, creating further uncertainty as the playoffs approach.
On the defensive line, Keion White is under evaluation for a hamstring issue, with safety Ji’Ayir Brown (ribs) and lineman Kalia Davis (knee tendinitis) listed as day-to-day. As the 49ers prepare for their playoff journey, the team’s resilience and depth will be tested on their path to potentially reclaiming glory in this postseason.
