San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch shared insights about the team’s wide receiver situation during an appearance on KNBR radio. With the offseason trade of Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk recovering from significant knee injuries, the wide receiver position has become a pivotal focus.
The 49ers recently signed veteran Demarcus Robinson, but he may face a three-game suspension at the start of the season. This leaves Jauan Jennings and rookie Ricky Pearsall as strong candidates to start in Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks. However, Pearsall is dealing with a minor hamstring injury that will keep him out for the rest of the organized team activities (OTAs). Lynch expressed disappointment over Pearsall’s injury but acknowledged the hard work he has put in during the offseason.
“Ricky’s had a really good offseason,” Lynch commented. He further explained their cautious approach given the injury and emphasized the importance of ensuring Pearsall fully recovers for training camp, given his potential as a long-term contributor to the team.
Regarding Brandon Aiyuk, there’s no definitive timeline for his return, but Lynch shared optimism about Aiyuk’s progress. “Brandon’s tracking in a good way with his knee,” he said, conveying confidence in the overall receiver group.
The competition among the wide receivers remains fierce, especially with the recent draft selections of Jordan Watkins and Junior Bergen. Although Bergen is expected to contribute mainly on special teams, Lynch noted that he has shown promise offensively as well. Additionally, Jacob Cowing’s development has caught Lynch’s attention as someone to watch as the team progresses toward training camp.
When asked about the possibility of signing another wide receiver before the season, Lynch remained open but assured fans that the team feels confident in its current roster depth. “You never close the door on that,” he stated, indicating an openness to enhancing the team’s receiver corps if the opportunity arises.
