The San Francisco 49ers remain hopeful regarding quarterback Brock Purdy’s availability for their upcoming matchup against the Buffalo Bills in Week 13. As reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, internal concerns about Purdy’s condition do not appear to be significant.
Purdy is currently sidelined due to shoulder soreness, which prevented him from participating in Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has stated that there are no “long-term concerns,” although he acknowledged that Purdy’s condition caused some surprise when he resumed activities on Thursday.
Shanahan explained, “We got the MRI on Monday, and we really just thought he needed some rest… but when he started up Thursday, it surprised him, it surprised us how (his shoulder injury) felt. So, we had to shut him down.” While the team’s outlook is cautiously optimistic, Shanahan admitted that Purdy’s status for the next game is still uncertain.
In light of Purdy’s injury, rumors suggest that the 49ers may consider pursuing former New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones to bolster their depth at the position. With a current record of 5-5, the team shares a three-way tie for second place in the NFC West, making every game critical as they strive to secure a playoff spot amid this injury-plagued season.
In the meantime, quarterback Brandon Allen will start in Purdy’s stead, with Joshua Dobbs acting as his backup. Allen, who last started a game in 2021, brings limited experience, having amassed 1,611 yards, 10 touchdowns, and six interceptions during his career. Meanwhile, Dobbs has displayed inconsistency in his recent playing time, with a record of 2,464 passing yards, 13 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions last season.
While Daniel Jones has his own set of challenges, the situation highlights the 49ers’ need for a reliable quarterback as they navigate their playoff ambitions.
The 49ers’ determination to explore options demonstrates their proactive approach in addressing the quarterback position, showcasing their commitment to securing the team’s future success. As they manage injuries, the journey could ultimately strengthen their resolve and team chemistry, fostering a resilient environment.
With the right adjustments and some luck on the injury front, the 49ers could still make a significant impact in the latter part of the season.
