Forty-eight iTaukei villages located within or near municipal boundaries are now eligible to vote in Local Government Elections, following a decision by the government to formally include these villages within municipal limits. This change is enacted under the authority granted by Section 125 of the Local Government Act 1972.

Minister Maciu Nalumisa highlighted that this adjustment is administrative in nature and will not impact land ownership, cultural traditions, or the governance structures of the villages. Historically, some of these villages received services from local councils despite being classified as part of the village reserve and lying outside municipal boundaries, which typically falls under the jurisdiction of iTaukei Affairs.

Importantly, Nalumisa reassured the communities that they will not incur municipal rates due to their newfound classification within municipal wards. “They won’t be paying municipal rates. It’s only for services, government services, government subsidy, and I want to make it clear that they won’t be paying any town rates,” he affirmed. The government’s intention is not to impose any financial burdens but rather to promote equity in access to essential services for these villages. “What we are trying to do now is ensure they have the same services as the municipal area,” he added.

This initiative marks a meaningful advancement toward inclusivity, allowing these villages the opportunity to participate in the electoral process while ensuring they receive vital government services without the financial encumbrance. This step reflects a commitment to enhancing civic engagement and support for all communities within proximity to municipal areas.
