At just 22 years old, Nedley Neha Nand has reached a significant milestone by graduating as a nurse, driven by a profound sense of purpose and commitment to service. Last month, Ms. Nand celebrated her graduation from Fiji National University at a ceremony held at Vodafone Arena in Suva, marking the end of a journey defined by resilience, faith, and community support.
Growing up in Naitonitoni, Navua, as the only child in a loving and supportive household, Ms. Nand benefitted from a nurturing environment. “Growing up as the only child and grandchild meant I was surrounded by constant love, encouragement, and guidance,” she reflected. Raised in a Christian home, she credits her upbringing for instilling values of discipline, humility, and compassion.
“My parents demonstrated the meaning of perseverance through their dedication to work, which shaped my belief that hard work and faith could lead to achieving any dream,” she shared. Her journey began at Vashist Muni College, where her high school experiences were filled with personal growth, friendship, and leadership. One pivotal moment was when her father pinned a school prefect badge on her—a symbol of pride that deeply resonated with her.
Initially aspiring to be a science teacher, Ms. Nand’s career path changed after encouragement from her mother to pursue nursing. “She spoke about the meaningful impact of the profession, and as I learned more, I found inspiration,” she explained. Nursing, she realized, would allow her to serve and uplift others profoundly. “I chose nursing because it is more than a career. It is a calling that allows me to touch lives, inspire healing, and offer comfort and hope when people need it most.”
On her graduation day, emotions ran high as the occasion was a tribute to her parents’ sacrifices. Looking forward, Ms. Nand plans to specialize in mental health nursing, aspiring to become a psychiatric/mental health nurse within the next five years. “I hope to create safe and supportive spaces for individuals dealing with mental health challenges, helping them feel heard and empowered.”
Beyond her nursing career, Ms. Nand finds solace in music, which she considers her escape and a means to reconnect with herself. “Music helps me unwind and reflect.”
For those aspiring to enter the nursing field, her message is clear: “Nursing will challenge you, shape you, and reward you in ways you cannot imagine. Let your compassion guide you, embrace every learning experience, and remember that you are choosing a path that touches lives and uplifts communities, especially in a beautiful place like Fiji.”
Nedley Neha Nand’s journey exemplifies the profound impact one individual can have on their community, inspiring hope and care for those in need.
