Residents of Vatuvavui Village are expressing their outrage over the recent drug bust at Vatia Wharf, which falls within their fishing grounds. Village headman Niko Sucuvakaivalu condemned the actions of drug lords and local individuals involved in illegal activities, emphasizing that their interests lie solely in profit rather than the safety and well-being of the community.
Sucuvakaivalu voiced his anger, particularly towards Fijians engaged in these illicit activities, stating, “They don’t have any care or concern about the well-being of our younger generations.” He highlighted the detrimental effects that drugs have on individuals and families, stressing that those involved prioritize financial gain over the lives affected by drugs.
The wharf, typically a quiet location, has emerged as a risky spot for smugglers, endangering locals, including children who play and swim in the area. “What if our people were out there fishing and timed this illegal activity? It would be a big issue,” he cautioned, underlining the potential dangers posed by drug trafficking near their communal spaces.
In a significant enforcement action, eleven individuals have recently been brought before the court in connection with the seizure of 2.4 tonnes of cocaine at Vatia. This bust underscores the ongoing challenges law enforcement faces in combating drug-related crimes while ensuring community safety.
