U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins made a significant announcement at the Iowa State Fair, revealing a $152 million investment aimed at enhancing rural Iowa communities. This funding will be allocated to 19 projects spanning 20 counties and is targeted at improving infrastructure and services vital for rural residents.

During her speech at the Governor’s Charity Steer Show, Rollins emphasized the necessity of these investments, stating, “Whether it’s better hospitals in rural America, better health care in rural America, better childcare in rural America, better services, water, etc., in rural America.” She underscored the importance of sustaining rural communities, which she described as the heart of American spirit and resilience.

Among the notable projects is a $37 million loan designated for the Guthrie County Hospital aimed at expanding and modernizing its facility to better serve the community. The investment also includes funding for water and wastewater projects across 13 cities, as well as grants for transportation improvements and loans to stimulate rural business growth.

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds expressed gratitude for the funding, acknowledging the challenges facing the agricultural economy and affirming the positive impact this investment will have on rural communities. “Today’s announcement is great news for all the communities receiving these grants. I look forward to building on these efforts to make our rural communities stronger and more prosperous than ever,” she said.

Additionally, Rollins announced the nomination of Iowan Glen R. Smith as the next Under Secretary for Rural Development at the USDA. Smith’s background in farming and agribusiness, along with his previous experience on the Board of Directors of the Farm Credit Administration, positions him well for this role.

This investment not only aims to improve essential services for rural Iowans but also seeks to stimulate economic growth and encourage private investment in the area, reinforcing the commitment to support these vital communities.
