At just 12 years old, Setaita Senikuba Vakaweleivalu is proving that big dreams can burgeon from modest beginnings and that passion knows no bounds when it comes to age. The Class 8 student at Stella Maris is among Suva Volleyball’s youngest rising stars, showcasing immense potential in the sport.
Hailing from Levuka i Gau in Lomaiviti, with maternal ties to Matanimoli, Noco, Rewa, Setaita’s volleyball journey began well before she ever set foot on a competitive court. As a child, she often watched her parents play in exciting matches at Sukuna Camp, where her affection for volleyball quietly blossomed.
Growing up in the Nasova Police Barracks, volleyball became an integral part of her daily routine. The vibrant sounds of the game filled the atmosphere, making it a natural fit for Setaita. She has drawn inspiration from the late Teresia Vocevoce, a respected Police Women’s coach and member of the Suva coaching team, whose positive influence instilled in her the values of discipline, teamwork, and self-belief.
Setaita’s talent was notably recognized when Mila Karisitiana, the captain of the Phoenix team under Suva Volleyball, invited her to join the squad. This pivotal moment was transformative for the young athlete. Wearing the Suva jersey for the first time at the recent Vulaca Tournament was described by Setaita as an emotional and unforgettable experience, marking a proud achievement for a girl still in primary school as she competed alongside seasoned players.
Despite her young age, Setaita exemplifies maturity and gratitude. She appreciates the efforts of the Suva Volleyball Association management and coaches who are dedicated to fostering young talents and providing opportunities for growth through inclusion and learning. Setaita also acknowledges the unwavering support of her parents, especially her father, who continues to encourage her aspirations from abroad.
Looking ahead, Setaita is excited to participate in the upcoming Western Rally, Vanua, and Easter championships, nurturing her commitment to volleyball and aiming high in her sporting endeavors. Her story serves as an inspiring reminder that with passion and support, anything is possible, regardless of age.
