A significant cleanup initiative has successfully removed large industrial tires washed ashore near Campbell River. Spearheaded by Greenways Land Trust, the operation resulted in the extraction of eleven tires, each weighing around four tonnes and filled with Styrofoam. These tires represented a serious threat to the environment and local wildlife.

The cleanup involved tugboats that towed the tires back to shore where they were carefully lifted from the water and disposed of properly. Camille Andrews, Greenways Habitat Management Coordinator, emphasized the importance of community collaboration in making this challenging effort a success, highlighting the commitment of their partners in the project.

In response to this incident, Greenways is now collaborating with the City of Campbell River and Fisheries and Oceans Canada to develop a comprehensive marine debris response plan aimed at ensuring swift and effective management of any future occurrences.

The tires are suspected to have been dislodged from a dock or barge during a recent storm. Residents are encouraged to report any suspected environmental violations to the Report All Poachers and Polluters line at 1-877-952-7277 or online through the Government of British Columbia.

This proactive response not only addresses the immediate environmental hazards but also sets a precedent for future preventive measures, showcasing the power of community unity in safeguarding natural resources.
